The 20th Commemoration of the Kent State shootings, held in 1990, remains one of the largest-attended of all the annual gatherings. Preparations had begun a few years in advance, culminating in the creation of the May 4 20th Anniversary Commission, at the behest of President Michael Schwartz, in 1989. Dr. Michael Schwartz was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Northwestern University, but left school during his junior year after passing the certified public accountant exam. He went on to earn several degrees including a bachelor's in psychology, a master's in industrial relations, and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Illinois. From 1962 to 1976 Schwartz taught psychology and sociology at Wayne State University, Indiana University, and Florida Atlantic University....
